The Company

Widely regarded in the local market as one of the most established and reliable commercial building contractors in Melbourne, this head building contractor has a national footprint and delivers projects up to $100M.  More recently they have been delivering the following types of projects:

• Schools
• Health projects
• Cladding works
• Sports/pavilions 
• Hotels 

This Design Manager opportunity exists as the business is developing a new team with some growth plans for 2021.

The Role

Well suited to an exisiting Design Manager or a Design Coordinator who is looking to make that step up, the position sits between the tendering and estimating front end works and site operations and will work across a variety of building projects.  Duties will include:  

• Manage and coordinate all aspects of the design process to ensure projects are delivered on time
• Manage the design works, including liaison with the planners and consultancies to ensure that the design deliverables are achieved
• Review all design deliverables for completeness and constructability and manage the review of all drawings by the Project Team
• Validate design status by identifying any gaps or omissions
• Contribute to the successful conversion of project throughout the bid and tender process
• Working with Construction Teams to manage and monitor design intent, functionality and compliance through project delivery.
• Monitor design risk in contract management, safety and project delivery.
• Provide guidance and advice on buildability and design issues /when they crop up

Who we are looking for

This role is likely suited to a Senior Design Coordinator or Assistant Design Manager who is on the cusp of stepping into a full Design Manager role, but limited in opportunities in their current role, or, looking for a bigger builder to develop within.  The likely experiences of the successful candidate will look something like:

• Experience working within a head contractor, probably for 3 + years
• Someone with a good understanding of the practicalities of construction
• A strong communicator who is comfortable meeting clients, consultants or working on site
• Someone who has a strong understanding of Australian Building Standards
• Likely a design or construction management degree
