Development Victoria has officially gained approval from DELWP to develop the former Fitzroy Gasworks site into a sustainable, multi-purpose urban precinct. The project, expected to be completed by 2026, will set a new standard for sustainable and affordable urban renewal.
“The Development Plan approval is a major milestone for the project which was truly developed in partnership with the community. We look forward to transforming Fitzroy Gasworks for everyone to enjoy,” said Niall Cunningham, Acting Group Head of Precincts at Development Victoria.
Enviropacific was appointed to perform remediation of the site under the watch of an independent, EPA-accredited auditor. That process has now finished, ready for the next phase of the project to begin.
The project includes constructing a range of affordable and sustainable homes, a sports centre to complement the new Wurun Senior School Campus, and public spaces for recreation.
Ease of accessibility for bicyclists, tram users, pedestrians and motorists was front of mind in the precinct’s design. Housing affordability was also a significant consideration, with Development Victoria offering 20 percent of homes at the site as affordable housing.
The site has already achieved the 6 Star Green Star Communities rating. Development Victoria has committed to retaining this certification throughout the precinct’s development.
Tenders have been invited from selected builders for the design and construct contract, with L U Simon and Kane Constructions making submissions so far.
