Melbourne City Council has embarked on an ambitious strategy to reach net zero by 2040 – and they want developers and property owners to have their say about it.
The Council has released a discussion paper titled Zero Carbon Buildings for Melbourne. It proposes seven key initiatives, including incentivising building performance through reduced rates and introducing an emissions cap through local law.
To reach the target, almost 80 buildings per year would have to be refurbished to improve energy efficiency – a challenging target that exceeds the market’s current delivery rate.
Councillor Sally Capp believes that collaboration is key to achieving the milestone.
“By working alongside key industry, academic, and government partners, we can accelerate our journey towards zero net emissions– reducing costs and improving our environment.
“We want to hear from those involved in every facet of the building industry– so we can better understand how to empower them to help us create a greener, more sustainable city for all Melburnians.”
Feedback on the discussion paper can be provided via Participate Melbourne until 16 November 2022.
