The Victorian Government has announced the two consortiums that will deliver the multibillion-dollar North East Link project.

Nexus, a consortium comprising Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction, Symal Infrastructure, WSP Australia, and Arcadis Australia Pacific, has been appointed to lead the $5.7 billion overhaul of the Eastern Freeway from Burke to Tram Road.

Meanwhile, AMA – consisting of Acciona Construction Australia, AECOM Australia, and MACA Civil – will be responsible for the $3.8 billion M80 Ring Road Upgrade.

The North East Link Project is the largest road project in Victoria’s history. It aims to connect the M80 Ring Road and the Eastern Freeway and is expected to:

  • Alleviate traffic congestion
  • Take 15,000 trucks off local roads daily
  • Save 35 minutes in travel time from the east to the outer north
  • Create 12,000 jobs

The project has come under fire recently following cost blowouts of more than $10 billion on the original project cost given in the 2019 business case.

The State Government has blamed those cost blowouts on ‘the spike in inflation and the massive escalation in construction costs we’re seeing across Australia and the world.’

But Premier Jacinta Allan has defended the project, stating that ‘this project has been talked about for 60 years – we’re getting on and building the much-needed missing link because families in our growing state need it and jobs depend on it.’
