Port Phillip Council has released an indicative site layout for a proposed live music venue at the St Kilda Triangle.
The proposal comes after a $430,000 feasibility study, which found that the site can accommodate a 5,000-capacity indoor venue – a size in demand by Melbourne’s live music scene.
‘We’ve spoken to music industry experts from venues and promoters to performers to gauge the feasibility of this creative concept and they say it would help address a critical shortage of medium-large live music spaces,’ explained Mayor Heather Cunsolo.
Council did not include a budget for the project. Instead, it will rely on financial support from the State Government to construct the venue, if the community gives the project a tick of approval.
This isn’t the first proposal for the St Kilda Triangle, which is located next to Luna Park and the Palais Theatre.
Citta Property Group won a tender to redevelop the site after a fire destroyed the previous venue – the Palace Nightclub – in 2007. Citta’s development, dubbed the unfortunate nickname “Chadstone by the sea”, was abandoned following strong community opposition.
This new proposal would make St Kilda the home of Victoria’s first Live Music Precinct – cementing the suburb’s reputation as a live music mecca.
Council will now run a six-week community consultation on the concept, ending on 19 October 2023. The results of that feedback will inform a report on potential next steps, to be considered by Council later this year.
