Salter Brothers has put forward an ambitious plan to construct a 32-storey skyscraper above the existing InterContinental Hotel, beside the Rialto Towers.

Under Salter’s plan, the site’s existing historic buildings – known as the Winfield Building and the Rialto Building – will remain. Their historic attributes will be protected through an application to Heritage Victoria to renew the two heritage assets. However, a 1980s extension built by Grollo will be demolished and replaced by the futuristic-looking tower, which will be mostly hidden behind the adjacent Rialto Towers.

Cox Architecture created the new design, which includes 270 luxury hotel rooms, 22,000 square metres of premium office space, and a club. There are also plans to uncover concealed heritage elements and reopen a historic, horseshoe-shaped laneway for hospitality and retail.

An application to Heritage Victoria and the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning will be lodged shortly. If approved, works will commence in 2025, with the project slated to last about three years.
